Description The role of vitamin A derivatives, retinoids, for vision has been recognized for decades. It was shown more recently that retinoids are involved also in a number of other essential life processes, including, for example, differentiation, hematopoiesis, bone development, and pattern formation during embryogenesis. An overview is presented here of the current knowledge about the molecules which bind retinoids and mediate their biological effects - the reinoid receptors.
