Description Psychotherapists can be seen as at-risk workers exposed to emotionally challenging client depressive states. They experience the drama of an endless moment when two people sit across from each other feeling hopeless and unable to approach each other. In that moment, they may be tempted to give up, to resign, to lose, to give up hope, and yet they must stay and thus embody hope. By processing their own experience, therapists transform the dynamics of the depressive situation and allow the client to experience human companionship without entitlement or expectation. Depression can then be transformed into healthy grieving. This book offers therapists a guide to anchoring themselves in a psychotherapy session by understanding their experience with a depressed client and transforming their often negative feelings into compassion for the client and themselves. The author refers to his own research work and gives numerous examples from his therapeutic practice.
