Description Peat deposits represent a natural archive of past biota, including bryophyte communities. Bryophytes are often well preserved over thousands of years, and it is possible to identify them even to the species level. During our palaeoecological research of the Pihoviny mire in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, we found the moss Meesia uliginosa s. str. in the basal layer of a peat profile (168–171 cm) dated to the Late Glacial (ca 13,950 cal yr BP). Compared with the Plant macrofossil database of the Czech and Slovak Republic, this species has never been found in organic sediments in these countries, and thus the find is exceptional. Moreover, this species is neither present in other international macrofossil databases.
