| Description | In the eyes of ancient Romans, the laurel wreath of a triumphator and the civic wreath made of oak leaves represented the highest honours that a mortal Roman could achieve: they were the symbol of victory of the Roman state, or, respectively, the testimony of the highest service to the civic collective. The lecture focused on the following topics: the ways the leading personalities of the Late Republic used these symbols and the ways the imperial propaganda appropriated them; what changes they underwent in general at the time when the state was no longer represented by the collective body of the senate and the people, but its foremost citizen. Together with the most interesting literary testimonies numerous iconographic sources were presented (coins, portraits, gems). |
