Description The paper deals with the issue of playing the piano in the 19th century. It describes the methods of practice and describes the principles on which piano lessons were based at that time. It was primarily an isolated exercise of individual fingers. This often led to hand pain and injuries. For addition, the text also includes devices that were used for better effect from practicing the instrument. The surgeon Duchoslav Panýrek dealt with diseases of the hands of piano performers in the Czech lands. In his writings, he dealt not only with the causes and manifestations of hand diseases, but also proposed their treatment. Božena Vepřovská also commented on these health problems through the eyes of medicine at the time. Today, these methods are far outmoded and have only historical signifikance. The article was prepared on the basis of an archival type of research conducted by the author herself.
