Description Paper presented at the annual environmental archaeology conference on the relationship between humans and the environment. The attitude to the mountains can be an example of relatively rapid changes in the human relationship to a particular environment, or landscape, which are not primarily motivated by utilitarian or natural environmental changes, but by relatively complex changes in culture. Within European culture, the relationship to mountain terrains is very complex and has undergone a long evolution, but - at the level of their aesthetic and artistic appreciation - only relatively recently has there been a relatively rapid reversal from disinterest and disgust to high appreciation and admiration. This change was then linked to the development of hiking, mountaineering, landscape painting, etc. In addition to this transformation of the appreciation of the mountain environment itself, the paper will also frame the rich secondary literature on the subject, its development, methodological problems, and the debate over the extent and speed of the transformation of European culture's relationship to the mountain environment.
