Description A total of 347–414 breeding pairs of the Western Jackdaw (Coloeus monedula) were recorded in South Moravia during the breeding census in 2019 and 2020. The total size of this population can be estimated at 420–440 pairs. The breeding population has increased strikingly since the last research in 2001 (when 169–205 breeding pairs were found), mainly thanks to higher numbers in cities (Brno, Znojmo, etc.) and a new type of breeding in nest-boxes. Most Jackdaws from the Brno-venkov district, where they used natural cavities in trees, shifted to buildings in Brno. Thus, synanthropization continues. Breeding in polystyrene insulation was recorded as a new phenomenon. It is used by more than a half of the nesting pairs in the Brno population and this type of breeding is still expanding. Despite the significant increase of the jackdaw population in the studied area, it is necessary to study and protect it, because it is often endangered by the destruction of nesting opportunities.
