Description The portal located on the eastern side of the town hall building is a remarkable monument, which was designed to represent the government of Olomouc with a great dignity. One of the basic theses of my paper, which I attempt to sketch using archival sources, is a rejection of the view that it is the work of Lombard stonecutters. My aim will be to present regional workshop relations with overlaps to other monuments in Central Moravia (Kroměříž, Prostějov) and to show that doubts associated with Lombard activity are also raised by recent research in the case of other Central European artefacts. My intention will be to explain why the antique mode was used in Olomouc and what role the idea of the presumed foundation of the city by the Romans played in it. I will also focus on the iconography of the portal and the development of a new concept of symbolic language in Moravia.
