Description The primary focus of the conference is on the role of visual culture within the complex relationship between minority groups and the majority, often shaped by challenges such as disadvantage, oppression, marginalisation, exclusion, isolation, forced assimilation, and censorship. The conference will be opened by Jan Dienstbier (Institute of Art History of the CAS; Department of Art History of the Charles University) with a lecture entitled "Images of Malice. Dynamics of stereotyping and the Warburgian survival", which will touch upon the topic of anti-Semitism and anti-Judaism in the visual culture of the Czech lands. Student papers will focus on the reception of Jerusalem in fourth-century Rome, the influence of intellectual minorities on selected art commissions in the late Middle Ages, and the situation of artists and art historians in communist Czechoslovakia.
