Description Because of improved treatment, the proportion of patients cured is increasing in all European countries. But surviving intensive cancer treatment comes at a price. The late effects of treatment, which can manifest themselves decades after the end of treatment, have a major impact on patients' quality of life and, in some cases, can be life-threatening. However, the quality of care for cured patients is still not affordable in many European countries. Although the international community, both medical and non-profit, is gradually focusing on the consequences of treatment, their control and possible minimisation of their impact on quality of life, the community of cured patients in Slovakia and the Czech Republic (with a few local exceptions) is not organised, not informed/educated about the possible consequences of treatment and does not have access to an interdisciplinary infrastructure for the care of these former patients. The aim of the first Czechoslovak conference was to provide information about possible consequences of treatment, about activities, projects and concepts of aftercare infrastructure abroad and in the Czech Republic, to provide an opportunity to contact other recovered patients in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and to explore whether there is potential/interest in active community participation on these issues. We overcame our limited capacity and our concerns about filling the conference hall were unnecessary. In addition to patients, health professionals expressed interest in the event and we ended up with an active group of recovered patients who have the energy and desire to move important issues forward.
