| Description | The paper offers a thematic analysis of the historical prose works of Nina Svobodová. It is focused on the Italian Renaissance and its great artists. Svobodová wrote novels inspired by the lives of famous artists, writers and saints who lived in Italy. Through the perspective of her Catholic orientation, she viewed the stories and especially the literary figures she wrote about. As a result, we can detect a deep inspiration in the Catholic perception of life, which is pronounced, in female characters and motifs based on the writer's deep Catholic spirituality and Marian devotion. Svobodová uses the symbolism of colours and flowers as a tool to enhance the perception of the story. She has a specific approach to depicting the character of literary figures, who represent typical male and female characters. Similes and the use of metaphors are the basis of Svobodová's writing, which also appears in other authors of her period, but Svobodová would rein them in. Although her novels are not as well known, they are important for their systematic use of symbols and motifs, including in their treatment of characters that are typical of Czech Catholic literature of the first half of the 20th century. |
