Description In 1971, the American art historian Linda Nochlin posed the question, "Why have there been no great women artists?" in a groundbreaking essay—to highlight how few female artists are represented in art history. Since then, much has changed, and numerous scholars, building on the work of Nochlin and her colleagues, have inscribed a number of "great women artists" into art history—one might think, for example, of Louise Bourgeois, Artemisia Gentileschi, or Hilma af Klint.
