| Description | Schizophrenia is currently described as one of the most severe psychotic disorders, associated with the risk of social and physical deterioration. It typically begins in adolescence. Approximately two-thirds of patients tend to experience chronic symptoms, which shorten life expectancy. Consequently, this condition represents a significant issue not only for the individual and their family but also for society as a whole. Key factors influencing the success of schizophrenia treatment include early and thorough diagnosis, an individualized approach to each patient, as well as comprehensive treatment. Comprehensive treatment is not limited to prescribing appropriate medication but also involves actively supporting medication adherence by both the doctor and the patient’s closest relatives. This is crucial, as relapse most often occurs when patients discontinue their medication. This retrospective study primarily focuses on the psychopharmacotherapy of hospitalised patients with schizophrenia at the Psychiatric Clinic of the University Hospital Brno in 2022, including the use of new antipsychotics, depot formulations, and combination therapies, and compares it with a retrospective study titled Psychopharmacological treatment of schizophrenia at the Psychiatric Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, and University Hospital Brno in 2010 (Ustohal et al., 2012), which was presented at the 54th Czech-Slovak psychopharmacological conference in Jeseník in 2012. |
