| Description | Singulatives are morphologically marked singular forms created from an unmarked mass/collective base (e.g. Standard Arabic na?l ‘bees’ > na?l-at ‘(one) bee’; Fassi Fehri 2018: p. 4). They traditionally analyzed as exclusively referring to single atoms/individuals in the denotation of the noun they are derived from (Mathieu 2014, Dali & Mathieu 2021 a.o.). In this paper, we aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of singulative systems by analyzing the previously unnoticed taxonomic reading of singulatives. We base our analysis on new data from the singulative suffix -at in Hasawi Arabic (HA), a dialect of Arabic spoken in eastern Saudi Arabia. |
