| Description | This summary research report presents the results of a project focused on restoring biodiversity in lowland meadow wetlands through the sowing of the hemiparasitic plants Odontites vernus subsp. serotinus and Melampyrum arvense. The project tested this approach as a nature-based tool for suppressing invasive plant species, particularly goldenrods (Solidago spp.) and asters (Symphyotrichum spp.), which contribute to the degradation of wet meadow habitats and vegetation homogenisation. The research was carried out at two model sites in the South Moravian Region – Krče near Břeclav and the Krumvíř wetland – and included experimental sowing, comparison of plots with and without hemiparasites, regular mowing management, and monitoring of changes in vegetation and selected groups of terrestrial invertebrates. The report evaluates the effectiveness of hemiparasitic plants in weakening dominant invasive species, their contribution to the recovery of a more natural vegetation structure, and their effects on the diversity of vascular plants and terrestrial invertebrates. It also assesses the potential for combining hemiparasite sowing with standard conservation management, particularly one-cut or two-cut mowing regimes and, where appropriate, extensive grazing. The results provide an expert basis for applying hemiparasitic plants in practical nature conservation, restoration projects, and management planning for degraded wetland and meadow habitats. |
