Citation
Description This book draws on the day-to-day practice of clinical medicine in hospitals and outpatient clinics, where staff often work under significant time pressure, with a high degree of responsibility, and at the limits of their staffing capacity. In such an environment, it is unrealistic to expect healthcare professionals to systematically devote themselves to the study of medical psychology in all its breadth and complexity. The purpose of this book, therefore, is not to present additional theory, but to offer clinically and scientifically grounded support for thinking through communication-challenging situations. The text illustrates ways to navigate these situations and determine the best course of action so that communication is clear, sensitive, and fosters a sense of safety in the relationship between patient and healthcare professional. The words and phrases we offer in this book are not intended as instructions, but as examples and variations of good practice that can be modified, combined, and adapted in any way to your unique experience and personality.
