In such an environment, it is unrealistic to expect healthcare professionals to systematically devote themselves to the study of medical psychology in all its breadth and complexity. The purpose of this book, therefore, is not to present additional theory, but to offer clinically and scientifically grounded support for thinking through communication-challenging situations. The text illustrates ways to navigate these situations and determine the best course of action so that communication is clear, sensitive, and fosters a sense of safety in the relationship between patient and healthcare professional.
