Description The Šlapanice locality east of Brno is an active deposit of Lower Badenian sediments, belonging to the southern part of the Carpathian Foredeep. The mined rocks are represented by blue-grey massive silty clays (“tegels”) over 30 m thick, in which sandy layers and secondarily precipitated gypsum occur. The clays are overlain by gravel and gravelly sands about 2 m in thickness, the uppermost 3-5 m of the profile are represented by loess. The clays are very rich in fossils - foraminifers, sponges (spicules), mollusks, echinoderms (spines of echinoids), ostracods, bony fish (bones, scales, teeth, otoliths) and ichnofossils. Within the research of fossil seagrass/seaweed meadows, the calcareous clays at Šlapanice were studied by an integrated approach including paleontology (foraminifers, calcareous nannoplankton, molluscs, palynology), sedimentology and organic geochemistry (n-alkanes). This contribution presents the results of this study to date.
