Description The inclusion of beer culture in the Czech Republic on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Czech Republic was partly based on the role of the pub in social and cultural life. However, we need to ask more questions about the foundations of this role, how it changed during the 20th and 21st centuries, and how we can define it for use in modern research into everyday life and festivities. This paper will explore possible methodological approaches to the study of pubs in the Czech and Moravian regions after the Second World War, with an emphasis on their transformation following 1989. It will draw on a combination of historical, ethnological and sociological research, as the pub and its place in society cannot be analysed solely from the perspective of the historical sciences. The core of the paper will consist of findings drawn from specialist literature, the daily press, the arts and empirical research.
