Description [The interactions between pyridine bases and and phosphoryl halides has been studied with surprising results. While pyridine does not react with POCl3, the stronger basic 4-dimethylaminopyridine /DMAP/ reacts readily under formation of bis(4-dimethylaminopyridine)dioxophosphonium chloride. Contrary to POCl3, phosphoryl bromide reacts smoothly with both DMAP and pyridine to give crystalline complexes [(DMAP)2PO2]Br3 or [py2PO2]Br3,respectively.The observed difference in reactivity of phosphoryl halides towards particular Lewis bases can be explained by the variation in their basicity and a likely reaction mechanism reflecting these distinctions could be proposed.
