Description Research on soft signs in shcizophrenia is briefly reviewed. Further own resultsfound in males hospitalized for the first time with the diagnosis of first-episode schizophrenia are presented. The neurological soft signs were evaluated using the Neurological Evaluation Scale (n=90)during acute treatment and after one year (n=50). Soft signs were present in 66 (73%) of the 90 schizophrenic patients (defined as one NES item rated 2). In 2/4 component scores (motor coordination and motor sequencing) a significant decrease after 1 year in relation to values in acute treatment was observed. In a small sample of patientes succesfully treated only with risperidone no significant changes were found. Soft signs are evident only in a subgroup of patientes, which is consistent with the idea, that schizophrenia represents a heterogenous disorder.
