| Description | Analysis from the perspective of gender has, until now, been largely avoided in the conceptualisation of the prisoners subcultures. The dichotomous patterns of masculinity and femininity, however, function in this environment of total institution. This is in spite of the fact that prisons are outwardly mono-gender (men and women are strictly separated). Through ethnographic research in a womens prison, a map of gender meanings in prisoners subculture is drawn. These include lesbian partnerships and pseudo-families among their basic forms. |
