Description The labour market in the Czech Republic has been developing in a different way from the other post-communist economies. Political reluctance caused a delay of changes in the labour market. The impact was manifested in the late 1990s when unemployment increased sharply in nearly all regions of the Czech Republic. The state labour market policy was unable to react to the dramatically changing situation. This article attempts to find out whether ALMP can be an effective remedy for unemployment and whether it can moderate or stop its rate rise. As social democratic governments came to power in the Czech Republic, there was a rise in expenditures; however, the results are not apparent, particularly in the most affected regions, where the rise of unemployment rate has not been discontinued. As a part of this article, there is also a case study of ALMP impact on the labour market in South Moravia (NUTS 3).
