Description Reactions between phosphorus trihalides and pyridine or 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) have been studied to ascertain which of them form donor-acceptor complexes and to elucidate their molecular structures. While PF3 does not react with neither pyridine nor DMAP, PCl3 does with DMAP giving an 1:1 adduct of partly ionic structure [(DMAP)PCl2]+Cl-. PBr3 forms with pyridine and DMAP analogous complexes, however, with exces of DMAP could be isolated an 1:2 adduct. Its single crystal X-ray structure determination revealed an almost ionic structure with a donor-stabilized bromophosphenium cation [(DMAP)2PBr]+[Br-]2 and surprisingly short (1.763A) N-P bonds.
