| Description | The text of the contribution deals with Buddhism in the West, its history and partly also with the present state in the Czech Republic and abroad. The contribution is based on the thesis that Buddhism in the West, in Euro-American civilization represents a unique religious tradition sprouting from numerous and varied roots, whereby one of its main characteristic features is heterogeneity. Buddhism in the West is not a cohesive religious movement; as in its cradle, Asia, a lot of schools, traditions, teachings etc. have existed here, all of which acknowledge Buddha as their founder, however their teachings, practice and tradition substantially differ in many aspects. Four potential types of this religion can be distinguished in the western context, i.e. rationalistic, romantic, esoteric and engaged Buddhism. Apart from history of western Buddhism, we must also mention the role played in this process by the academic discipline, Buddhology, which sees Buddhism as the subject of study. |
