Description The article shows that the difference between written and spoken language is not caused just by the code in which the communication occurs, it has deeper roots: it is caused by the process of learning the language itself. While the spoken norm of the first language (the mother tongue) is learned by the natural process and in contact with the whole national language, the written norm is learned by a controlled didactic process and it is bound to the standard language. Also the perception of the written language differs from the perception of spoken language not only by the means of writing and hearing, but also in the mode of perception and the range of passages possible to perceive and interpret at once. The style of the communication is, sometimes unconsciously, influenced by all these factors. That is why the author thinks that the choice of the code, i.e. the decision whether the spoken or the written language will be used, is not really a stylistic factor comparable with other factors which influence the style of the text.
