Description In 2000 British sociologist Catherine Hakim introduced a new theory that she believes is very useful for the explanation of fertility trends in contemporary developed societies. She named it „preference theory“. Within the framework of this new theory, the author built a typology based on women s preferences for paid work and family. She used the typology in ascribing a certain number of children for each woman that could predict women s reproductive behaviour in relation to the social and family state policy. In the same context of preferences, David Voas published an article in 2003, where he presents the theory of conflicting preferences. This theory addresses the problematic of the diffrences between the ideal and real number of children. Voas considers that individual preferences of both partners and the way these preferences interact are important determinants for the number of children a family has. This article brings both information about these theories based on the concept of human preferences and criticism. We regard them as important tools due to the fact that they could enrich our knowledge in finding the factors, which influence the reproductive process and final number of children a family has, and the impact of the social and family policy on the preference for a certain number of children, after they will be empirically attested in the Czech milieu.
