Description The paper analyses Nicholas of Dresden's reaction to the prohibition of the lay chalice issued by the Council of Constance on July 15, 1415. It briefly compares it with the response of Jakoubek of Stříbro to the same matter and in consequence shows the close cooperation between these two important figures in the introduction of the lay chalice in Hussite Bohemia. A thorough analysis of Nicholas' tract known as the Apologia, its structure and logical reasoning is presented here. It is first set into the context of Nicholas' other eucharistic treatises and then the peculiar way of using the auctoritates in the Apologia in order to show the error of the council's prohibition is examined.
