Description Numerous foreign studies have confirmed, that smoking of mothers during pregnancy presents an independent risk factor for the occurence of the most different kinds of behavioral disorders in children, especially hyperactivity, disorders of concentration and asocial relationships. We have focused on observation of these associations during analyses of data obtained during different periods of prospective longitudinal study ELSPAC running. From the data obtained from mothers and paediatricians during the investigations of children in their three, respective five years of age were selected those signs, which characterize motoric, psychosocial, mental development and temperament of children. Prenatal and early postnatal exposition of children to cigarette smoke was assessed according to data given by mothers about their smoking behaviour six weeks after the delivery. Observed data were obtained from 3.400 three years and 4.983 five years old children: 90,5 % of them from both age periods were not exposed at all, 7,2% of children had mothers who smoked during whole pregnancy. The differences between them were statistically assessed by SPSS programme (tests Pearson s chí-quadrate, linear associations, probability rate, ANOVA). According to data given by mothers, prenatal exposition of children to passive smoking was associated with significantly more frequent absence of skills demanding more complex motoric coordination, occurence of data about absent-mindedness, disorders of concentration, hyperactivity, absence of social games and contacts with other children, signs of aggressivity. In the age of five, also the signals of possible retardation of school maturity has occured more often in exposed group of children. During investigations, paediatricians significantly more often found in both age groups of exposed children retardation of psychic development in the area of speech, concentration, socialisation, school maturity and strong negativism. These children also significantly more often showed sleeping and feeding disorders and, on the contrary, the lowest occurence of clear preference of right hand.
