| Description | The article represents a survey and an analysis of European medieval accounts on Indian Christians before the arrival of Portuguese missions. In the first part, early sources from the period between the 6th and 12th centuries are listed. The main sources for later tradition became the Acts of Thomas and the myth of Christian kingdom of Prester John. Travel reports of missionaries and travellers to India from the 13th and 14th centuries – namely those of Marco Polo, John de Marignolli, Odoric of Pordenone, Jordanus Catalanus and John of Montecorvino – are largely independent on this old tradition and bring new information. However, the attitude towards Indian Christians is largely dependent on the fact, wether they are concidered to be Nestorians or not. |
