Description p53 can regulate cell cycle, apoptosis and differentiation of multiple cell types. Ectopic p53 expression resumes capability of cell cycle regulation, differentiation and apoptosis in various leukemic cells. In this work, we expressed human p53 in v-myb-transformed chicken monoblasts. We found that even this protein sharing only 53% homology with its avian counterpart can block proliferation in G2 phase and induce monocytic differentiation. This documents that inter-species differences in p53 structure, promoters/enhancers and cofactors in avian and human cells are compatible with p53 functions controling cell cycle and differentiation. p53 protein was capable of retaining these functions even in the presence of active v-Myb oncoprotein. However, we did not observe any apoptosis in p53-expressing BM2 cells. This suggests that p53-driven signaling pathways controling apoptosis and differentiation/proliferation processes are independent.
