Description The potential impact of pesticides and other water contaminants on aquatic organisms has been widely discussed in connection with worldwide decline of frog population. In embryos, various metabolic pathways and enzymes can produce endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS), but also some environmental pollutants can contribute to generation of these reactive intermediates. Herbicide paraquat is known by its rapid reduction and instantaneous reoxidation to produce the reactive oxygen species; sequentially the peroxy and hydroxyl radicals derived from hydrogen peroxide initiate the lipid peroxidation of membranes altering most types of cellular molecules, such as lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Embryos are protected against oxidative stress by ROS scavengers. Low activities of scavenging enzymes resulting from pathological metabolism imbalances may reduce protection potential of embryo, potentially resulting in teratogenic events. The scope of experiment was to study the embryotoxic and teragenic effects of paraquat with the Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus (FETAX) and to assess its potential to affect antioxidative and detoxification parameters in a 24-hour period. The external addition of antioxidant ascorbic acid to prevent the damage caused by paraquat was also studied. In conclusion, the embryotoxic effects of paraquat seemed to linked to oxidative damage of embryos and the addition of ascorbic acid was followed by the drastically reduced embryotoxicity.
