Description A poster presented by Alena Kuderova at the "IPGSA 19th Annual Meeting", Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, July, 2007. While auxin role in root development has been thoroughly studied, the detailed description of cytokinin (CK) effects on root system morphology has been missing. Here we examine the effects of CK on root architecture during early development of Arabidopsis thaliana. At designated developmental points, greatly enhanced levels of biologically active CKs of zeatin-type identified a distinct developmental interval during which primary root (PR) elongation is susceptible to increases in the endogenous CK production. CK reduced quantitative parameters of PR meristems, disturbed graded distribution pattern of auxin response in LR primordia and impaired their development. Our findings suggest a negative role of CK in the regulation of the asymmetric auxin distribution and imply that there is crosstalk between the auxin and CK pathways during LR primordia development in A. thaliana.
