Citation
Description The key point in development of electro-acoustic media of the 1930s (which in many points prefigured todays media industry) was the coming of film sound. This book, inspired by so-called new film history and archaeology of media, investigates it as the main structural transformation of Czechoslovak cinema before its nationalization in 1945. Instead of looking at individual films as art works or at directors as autonomous artists, the book analyzes the whole "institution" of cinema, including organization of production, distribution, exhibition, as well as conditions of its reception. By stressing early-sound films hybrid nature as a new medium, it returns it back to its original historical context, among its key rivals and partners - recording industry, radio and popular music.
