Description During a parasitological survey of freshwater fish from Senegal (West Africa) and Kenya (East Africa) 121 specimens of eight species of the cichlid fishes were examined: Hemichromis fasciatus; Hemichromis letournaeuxi; Oreochromis niloticus; Sarotherodon galilaeus; Tilapia dageti; Tilapia guineensis; Tilapia zillii and Tylochromis intermedius. The Gyrodactylus parasites were found on four host species studied. Gyrodactylus cichlidarum was identified from H. fasciatus. New Gyrodactylus species; Gyrodactylus ergensi n. sp. was described from S. galilaeus and O. niloticus collected in Senegal. This species was also recorded on S. galilaeus obtained in Kenya. But Gyrodactylus specimens collected from O. niloticus in Kenya have been found to be different; based on the results of morphometrical analysis could be regarded a new species. Kenyan specimens have a larger hamuli and different shape of marginal hook sickles compared to other african Gyrodactylus species. These findings represent the first record of Gyrodactylus species in Senegal as well in Kenya.
