Description Polymer materials, like polycarbonate (PC), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) or bulk molding compound (BMC) polyester, have become important materials because they can be produced in large scale and are cheaper and lighter than glass, metal or other industrial materials. Despite all advantageous properties, PC, BMC and PPS have their limitations, such the low hardness, low wear resistance (PC, BMC, PPS) and degradation under UV irradiation (PC). This work was focused on preparation of protective coatings enabling to eliminate the above mentioned disadvantages of polymer materials. For that purpose hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H), nitrogen incorporated amorphous carbon (a-C:H:N) and plasma polymer films (ppHMDSO and ppHMDSZ) were deposited on polycarbonate, glass reinforced PPS and BMC substrates in low pressure capacitive discharges.
