Description Reactions of benzaldehydes with excess N,N dimethylacetamide in the presence of diethyl carbonate as dehydrating agent and a base gave (E)N,N dimethylcinnamamides in good yields. If hydroxybenzaldehydes are used as substrates the reaction is accompanied by alkylation.
