| Description | There is a rich history to German conservatism in Bohemia after 1890. The social and political background can be well illustrated on the life story of Hermann Ullmann. Ulman s beginnings are tied to Der Kunstwart, the magazine published by Avenarius. After 1912, when he started as coeditor of Deutsche Arbeit, the once literary magazine turned political after 1919 (Grenzlandzeitschrift). Having printed a critical paper over Alfred Hugenberg after his election failure, the owner-publisher, in Politische Wochenschrift, Ullmann lost his job. Two decades he worked for the foundation Verein für das Deutschtum im Ausland. After the takeover of the foundation by SS, Ullmann had to leave again, and became a foreign correspondent posted in the Balkans and since 1942 in the Switzerland. In his travelogue Brazilské léto (1930) is he dreaming of restoring status quo ante, he saw German expatriots in Brazil as a hopeful alternative to the urbanised and americanised Europe. |
