Description Response of taxonomic structure of algal assemblages, trophic and saprobic indices and taxa richness to environmental gradients was investigated in suburban streams with high organic and trophic load.Although all considered gradients(nutrient richness, electrical conductivity, substratum)explained significant portion of variance in taxonomic structure of assemblages, gradient of nutrient richness was most important.Trophic indices responded well neither to gradient of nutrient richness nor electrical conductivity;only TI DIA weakly correlated with nutrient richness, while TI with substratum gradient, which probably reflected hydraulic conditions. This was probably caused by shortness of nutrient richness gradient in heavily polluted streams, and by fact that indices were primarily set up to distinguish between low and high trophic levels, instead of distinguishing between high and yet higher levels.Algal taxa richness reflected quite strongly additive effect of nutrient richness and electrical conductivity.
