Description The aim of this study was to evaluate pathogenic potential of L. monocytogenes isolates from foods on the basis of virulence genes characteristics. Majority of tested isolates belonged to serotype 1/2a (54 %) and then to serotype 1/2b (23 %). All the strains carried virulence genes prfA, hlyA, actA, plcA, plcB, inlA, inlB, inlC and inlJ. Irrespective of the serotype or food type, all the tested L. monocytogenes strains showed the ability to induce listeriosis in humans.
