Description The book provides a comprehensive analysis of contemporary political systems and the current trends in their development. The authors focus mainly on Europe, but attention is also paid to non-European countries. Today’s European democracies are going through a number of dynamic processes which influence the functioning, quality, and perception of democratic political institutions and procedures. European integration itself and the resulting formation of multi-level government are one of such challenges, but not the only one. Current European politics must of course deal with other phenomena which can be noticed elsewhere in the Western world, be they personalization, media exposure, marketization of politics, decline of some traditional forms of political participation, or for example increasing political influence of the judicial system. These trends are not only described, but also interpreted from the point of view of their significance for further development of European democracies.
