Description The study deals with age and gender differences in usage of coping strategies and self-esteem in adolescence. Sample consists of 411 adolescents aged 12 – 19 years. Participants were divided in younger (pupils 12-15 years; N=245; F=115; M=130) and older (students 16-19 years; N=166; F=109; M=57) group. Brief COPE (Carver, 1997) was used to identify coping strategies and SLCS-R (Tafarodi a Swann, 2001) scale to identify self-esteem. Between-subject test showed that younger adolescents used more often denial. Older chose more often humor for coping. In younger group were more frequent feelings of self-incompetence and self-rejection. Gender differences show, girls used more emotional and instrumental support. Boys chose more often humor. Correlation and regression analysis showed that the self-competence is positively related to adaptive strategies and negatively related to maladaptive strategies.
