Description In this article the author wants through a metaphor of a house and a city to show that a social identity is for an urban population (considering the nature) two-times enveloped. Mainly by the extending of the root metaphors of a house and a city is trying to show in which manner it is enveloped. The author endeavours to find the analogies between the shaping of a city and a house and between the shaping of a human soul, who inhabits them. As a centre of a human way of social life is appointed a fireplace, its limit is a threshold (whether domestic or civic). The fireplace is turning (through the gigantisation into city) to something another: main square or town hall, temple etc. This shift very deeply moves the human soul and also it puts new ethical claims on it. In a city the complex function of the fireplace is divided into many houses and its “empty” place takes new forms, which have contractual character (nomos). The common story of the people from the fireplace is split in the city thanks to the crafts too, as it is outlined in the biblical story about the Tower of Babel. The civic way of life is – for first – dividing the complex power and authority into particular powers: legal, executive etc. The character of the human soul (a reflexive self-identity of the soul) is also by this division marked, because the fullfillment of these particular powers is achieved in the different spaces. An idea of complex (undivided) human is therefore also divided and it brings a danger that this idea will disappear in a particular social role.
