Description The contribution deals with development of geography as a schools subject in the Czech lands. The development of geography is divided in key phases, which are linked with the most important curriculum reforms. Based on the analysis of curricular documents and other authentic materials main changes in the aims and contents of geographical education are described. The authors analyse the reasons of these changes and try to answer the question how these intended changes were implemented in the school practice. The analysis has shown that geographical education was a subject of many educational reforms since it has been established. Moreover it has shown that the implementation of reform ideas as well as of intended changes hasn’t been successful. This could be interpreted by low acceptance of reform ideas and changes by teachers. The teacher as a key element of curriculum reform has been by many curriculum reforms omitted.
