Distinguished molecular biologist and 1993 Nobel Prize winner for chemistry. His long-term research work led to the introduction of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), one of the most important technologies invented in the twentieth century. It is one of the most popular and most useful technologies used in biology and medicine today. Kary Banks Mullis is currently a prominent researcher at the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute in , USA.
A proposal to grant an honorary degree of Doctor honoris causa in the field of biological sciences was submitted by the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University. The graduation ceremony was held on 5 May 2010.
