Leonard Etel is one of Europe's leading experts in financial and tax law. Thanks to his field of expertise, Professor Leonard Etel has become a well-known and respected figure not only in academic circles, but also among practitioners. His work was recognized by representatives of the Polish Ministry of Finance during work on the concept of general tax law reform. In 2014, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland established a codification commission for general tax law, chaired by Professor Etel. In addition to the honour associated with the scientific aspect of this project, it should be emphasized that for this reason, the professor was included in the list of the fifty most influential Polish lawyers according to the newspaper "Dziennik Gazeta Prawna".

A proposal to grant an honorary degree of Doctor Honoris Causa in the field of Financial Law was submitted by the Faculty of Law of Masaryk University. The graduation ceremony was held on 2 October 2025. A brochure introducing the nominee was issued on the occasion of the awarding of this honorary doctorate.
