Together we create a culture of quality teaching
At Masaryk University, we recognize that education is the central role of a university. Crucial for quality teaching is respect and dialogue among all participants, alongside equal opportunities in accessing education. These very principles are reflected in our logo: teaching as an equal relationship between students and teachers, who mutually develop one another. The book in our logo symbolises the foundation of quality teaching, rooted in the expertise of our teachers, yet simultaneously representing openness to all students and to new pedagogical approaches.
Our goal is to know how to define, monitor, evaluate, and support quality teaching at Masaryk University.
We know what quality teaching looks like
The Competency Framework: Pedagogical Competencies of University Teachers helps us define quality teaching. It outlines and introduces the pedagogical competencies of teachers, thereby contributing to the formulation of a shared vision of teaching quality at Masaryk University. The Competency Framework also serves as a basis for the creation of tools used in monitoring, evaluating, and supporting the quality of pedagogical activities of university teachers.
We collect and reflect on data about teaching quality
Thanks to the long-term high return rate of the course opinion poll, we have the opportunity to monitor and subsequently reflect on students’ feedback on courses. This information is supplemented by other methods of monitoring teaching quality, such as regular thematic evaluations.
We evaluate and recognize pedagogical activities
The evaluation of teachers’ pedagogical activities takes place during habilitation and professorship procedures, employee evaluations, and the accreditation and regular evaluation of degree programmes. Outstanding teachers at Masaryk University are also recognized in three categories of the MU Rector’s Awards and the new Award of the Vice-rector for Quality Teaching.
We support teachers in their development
Supporting teachers in developing pedagogical competencies is a necessary condition for building a culture of quality teaching. The Pedagogical Competence Development Centre offers workshops and educational programmes for teachers at various stages of their careers. Innovation of courses, CORE courses, and the use of AI in teaching are financially and methodically supported by internal calls.
We are prepared to respond flexibly
We actively monitor best practices abroad, cooperate with other Czech universities, and share experiences internally through faculty learning communities across all our faculties. At the institutional level, we are able to meet new challenges thanks to a robust quality assurance system. Furthermore, our services, such as the Student Advisory Centre and the Support Centre for Students with Special Needs, help us to effectively address the individual needs of both our teachers and our students.
