Biomedical research is an essential part of health services in all developed countries. Clinical trials of pharmaceuticals and medical devices and evaluation of therapeutic methods are performed in many Czech hospitals. They constitute for them considerable economic benefit. Our participation in international biomedical research enables to Czech physicians and other experts to master the newest remedies, enhances medical education and gives patients possibility of the best treatment. Studies shall be carried out with respect to up-to-date international and European standards. Their sponsors are usually foreign manufacturers of medicinal products or scientific associations. New Czech laws already adopted them, but future membership of Czech Republic in European Union postulates rigorous implementation of it rules. New standard of patient rights of the Council of Europe are also important. Legal and ethical cover of studies performed in Czech hospitals and controlled by domestic authorities
