Little is known about the experience and comprehension of infant death at birth in the Czech context. The project aims to fill this gap, and revise and enrich the existing international body of knowledge on this sensitive issue by an analysis in a Post-Socialist context. The phenomenon is approached as an intense emotional experience using interpretive sociological perspective. It is backed by theories of grief, concealment on death and reproductive loss and contextualised by medicalisation of birth and death, institutionalised care for the bereaved and normalizing practices in dealing with perinatal loss. However marginal statistically, this phenomenon can reveal approaches and definitions to liminal issues of humanity and trends in their potential change. How is it communicated, comprehended and what practices are used? How do categories of gender, class, ethnicity, age and religion intersect in analysing perinatal loss? The methodology is qualitative – interpretation of narratives; and is inspired by feminist research methods stressing collaborative non-exploitative approach.
The aim is to interpret practices and meanings of perinatal loss, reveal how categories of gender, class etc. intersect and situate the findings within theories on grief, reproductive loss and concealment of death. The goal is to enrich existing knowledge by analysis from a Post-Socialist context.
