The project focuses on a rather specific area of sociolinguistic research, which has already proven its methodological viability from a synchronic point of view, but has not yet been explored much from a historical perspective. It concerns the attitudes and evaluations of linguistic phenomena by speakers of Spanish in Spain and Latin America in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the influence of these evaluative judgments by influential groups of speakers on Spanish language policy. Attention will be paid to two main areas. The first will be newspaper and magazine texts. The second will be grammars and other linguistic manuals of the time. The research team will be interested in the opinions expressed by the writers of the time on various linguistic phenomena (orthoepic, orthographic, morphological, syntactic, lexical and stylistic) and their linguistic and ideological attitudes towards them.
