Description This contribution investigates the interaction of the mother tongue with a foreign language, here with particular emphasis on the English language, in construction of the multiple, i.e. national, cultural and personal layers of one’s identity. It is intended that an online survey targeting university students in relation to their language attitudes will be distributed on social media. Responses to questions about perceived national, cultural and personal aspects of students’ language identities will be contrasted with their individual reports on actual online language behavior and the preferences of the surveyed students. The preliminary interpretation of the collected data is to help us understand how the current generation of university students construes their language identity and what are their opinions concerning the increasing demand for English language competence. Further, how are these demands reflected in both their spare time and social media language use.
